The Certificate in Fashion (Level 4) is a practical, hands-on programme that introduces students to the fundamentals of fashion design and garment construction. It’s ideal for beginners who want to develop technical sewing, patternmaking, and design skills in a creative, studio-based environment.
Classes typically run from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm, four days a week, leaving one weekday free for part-time work. Students also have access to the workroom for self-directed learning and projects while the campus is open.
Applicants must be at least 17 years old (domestic) or 18 years old (international) during their first year at Whitecliffe.
No formal qualifications or portfolio are required.
International students must meet English language requirements with an IELTS (Academic) score of 5.5, with no band lower than 5.
No. You don’t need any prior sewing or fashion experience. The Certificate in Fashion (Level 4) is designed for beginners and teaches all core skills from scratch, including sewing, patternmaking, and working with industrial machines.
You’ll gain hands-on experience in garment construction, textile handling, and the use of professional equipment. The programme focuses on technical accuracy, creative problem-solving, and understanding the fashion design process from concept to completion.
Graduates can continue their studies with a direct pathway to the Bachelor of Sustainable Fashion Design at Whitecliffe. The certificate also provides foundational skills for entry-level roles or internships in the fashion and garment production industries.
No. Written work is minimal. Most assessments are based on practical projects and skill demonstrations, such as sewing, garment construction, and patternmaking, rather than essays or lengthy reports.
Most assignments are designed to be completed during class time. Homework is only required if you need to catch up on a project. There’s little expectation of additional work outside your scheduled hours.
Whitecliffe offers a supportive, small-class environment and encourages open communication about learning needs. Students can discuss any additional support or accommodations before or during enrolment to ensure an inclusive and positive learning experience.
Yes, students are responsible for purchasing consumable materials — approximately $450 — which include fabric, thread, and notions for projects. Many of these materials can be purchased conveniently from the campus shop at wholesale prices, with details provided before enrolment.
