FAQ

What is the Bachelor of Jewellery Design and Technology at Whitecliffe?

The Bachelor of Jewellery Design and Technology is a three-year degree that combines creativity, craftsmanship, and technology. It teaches students how to design, prototype, and produce professional-quality jewellery using both traditional techniques and modern digital tools such as CAD (computer-aided design).

What will I learn in this degree?

You’ll gain a broad range of skills in design thinking, metal fabrication, stone setting, casting, and 3D digital modelling. The programme also encourages you to explore different materials, techniques, and technologies, helping you translate creative ideas into finished, wearable art.

What are the entry requirements?

Applicants must be at least 17 years old (domestic) or 18 years old (international) during their first year of study. Completion of the Certificate in Jewellery (Level 4) or equivalent experience is strongly recommended. International students must meet English language requirements (IELTS 5.5 or equivalent, with no band lower than 5).

What are the class hours and study schedule like?

Classes are typically scheduled across several weekdays between 9:00 am and 4:30 pm. As a studio-based programme, students spend significant time in the workshop developing hands-on skills. The small class size allows for flexible, personalised supervision and additional access to facilities for self-directed projects.

Are hand tools supplied, or do I need to buy my own?

You’ll need to purchase your own set of jewellery-making tools, which you’ll use throughout the degree and beyond in your professional practice. Whitecliffe provides a detailed tool list before the programme begins, helping you set up your personal toolkit with the right equipment.

Do I need to pay for materials?

Yes. Students are required to pay for their own materials, including metals, stones, and consumables used in projects. This allows creative freedom to select materials that best suit your design aesthetic and budget.

How big are the classes?

Class sizes are small — typically 10 to 20 students — to ensure each learner has a dedicated workbench and access to individual guidance from tutors. The small cohort size also creates a strong sense of community and collaboration among students.

What are the career opportunities after graduation?

Graduates of the Bachelor of Jewellery Design and Technology go on to work in diverse areas such as:

  • Bespoke and fine jewellery studios
  • Manufacturing jewellers
  • Film and theatre prop studios
  • Retail jewellery sales and galleries
  • Self-employed artisan practice
  • CAD design and digital modelling

Some graduates also start their own jewellery brands or work internationally as designers and makers.

Will I have my own workspace or bench?

Yes. Each student is assigned a dedicated jewellery bench within the studio. This personal workspace allows you to experiment, prototype, and refine your craft throughout the degree, just like in a professional design workshop.

How does Whitecliffe support creative development and innovation?

Whitecliffe’s Bachelor of Jewellery Design and Technology emphasises critical thinking, creative experimentation, and sustainable design practices. Students are encouraged to explore new materials and technologies while receiving guidance from experienced jewellers and designers. The programme blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design innovation, preparing graduates to succeed in a rapidly evolving creative industry.
