In this programme, students will learn a range of advanced technical skills, from traditional flat pattern making and computer-aided pattern making to Adobe Illustrator and textile knowledge, empowering them to design, construct, and showcase creative fashion collections.
Students explore design development processes and develop sustainable practices shaping the future of the commercial fashion industry.
In this programme, students will advance their technical skills and deepen their understanding of the terminology and techniques used in fashion garment production. They'll learn a wide range of essential skills, including flat and computer-aided pattern making, Adobe Illustrator, and textile knowledge, empowering them to design, create, and showcase innovative fashion collections.
The programme includes two signature projects: Resene Colour of Fashion, where students experiment with contemporary colour palettes and bring Resene’s fashion colours to life through silk. This exciting, industry-linked project challenges students to push their creativity while preparing garments for presentation in front of a judging panel.
Additionally, students will design, develop, and manufacture a two-outfit collection, which will be showcased at the Whitecliffe Annual Fashion Show, providing a real-world platform for students to launch their designs into the industry.

The Diploma in Fashion (Level 5) is a practical, studio-based programme that develops advanced technical and creative fashion skills. It builds on foundational sewing and garment-construction knowledge from the NZ Certificate in Apparel and Fashion Technology (Level 4) and prepares students for careers in fashion production or further study.
Classes typically run from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm, four days a week, leaving one day free for part-time work. Students can also use the on-campus workroom for self-directed projects and independent study while the campus is open.
Applicants must be at least 17 years old (domestic) or 18 years old (international) during their first year at Whitecliffe.
You’ll also need one of the following:
Successful completion of the NZ Certificate in Apparel and Fashion Technology (Level 4), or
Equivalent industry experience with proven literacy, numeracy, and basic computer skills.
International applicants must also meet English-language requirements (IELTS 5.5 with no band lower than 5).
If you’ve completed the NZ Certificate in Apparel and Fashion Technology (Level 4) or have relevant experience, you’ll already have the base skills needed. The Diploma expands on these through more complex garment construction, design development, and collection work.
You’ll learn how to design, patternmake, and construct garments to a professional standard. The programme covers collection development, advanced sewing techniques, production processes, and real-world industry projects to prepare you for fashion-studio or manufacturing roles.
Graduates can move into entry-level fashion and apparel roles such as machinist, garment technician, or design-room assistant. Many continue to the Bachelor of Sustainable Fashion Design at Whitecliffe. Past students have gained experience with leading New Zealand labels including Kowtow, Yu Mei, and NOM*d.
Most assignments are completed during class hours. Homework is only required if you need to catch up on practical work or finalise projects. The programme is designed to keep most learning within your scheduled study time.
Whitecliffe offers a supportive, small-class learning environment and encourages open discussion about any learning needs. Students can arrange individual support or accommodations before or during enrolment to ensure the best study experience.
Yes. Students purchase consumable materials — approximately $450 — such as fabric, thread, and notions. Diploma students create a collection of two outfits, so costs may vary based on your design choices and fabrics. Most materials can be bought from the campus shop at wholesale prices, with full details provided before enrolment.
