Arts + Design Programmes

Certificate in Arts + Design and
Certificate in Digital Media + Design

NZQF Level 4, 60 credits
Taught at: Auckland, Manukau campuses

Domestic Student Entry Requirements:

  • Completed application form
  • Minimum age: Students must turn 17 within their first year of study at Whitecliffe
  • No portfolio required

International Student Entry Requirements:

  • Completed application form
  • Passport copy
  • Minimum age: Students must turn 18 within their first year of study at Whitecliffe
  • IELTS Academic overall score of 5.5 with no band less than 5.0 or equivalent
  • An interview may be required - this can be arranged via telephone or online
  • No portfolio required


Bachelor of Fine Arts
Fine ArtsPhoto MediaGraphic DesignFashion Design

NZQF Level 7, 360 credits
Taught at: Auckland campus

Domestic Student Entry Requirements:

  • Completed application form
  • Minimum age: Students must turn 17 within their first year of study at Whitecliffe
  • NCEA University Entrance or equivalent
  • CIE/IB Award
  • Discretionary Entrance is available to students who have gained exceptional marks in NCEA Level 2 and wish to embark on higher-level study. These students must display a high level of motivation and maturity
  • Some of the above academic requirements may be waived for students over the age of 20
  • Interview: All applicants for this programme are interviewed, and students should come to the interview prepared to discuss their work and ideas freely
  • Portfolio: This is brought to the interview and should include between 12-24 examples of original work showing breadth of ability. The portfolio can be specific to one genre if that has been the student's body of work. Digital copies of your portfolio will also be accepted
  • Letter of Intent: A 250-word letter of intent outlining reasons for wanting to study the BFA programme and desired pathway

International Student Entry Requirements:

  • Minimum age: Students must turn 18 within their first year of study at Whitecliffe
  • IELTS Academic overall score of 6.0 with no band less than 5.5 or equivalent
  • Academic transcripts: School or previous tertiary results
  • Interview: All applicants are interviewed for this programme. International student interviews are conducted via telephone or online
  • Portfolio: This is brought to the interview and should include between 12-24 examples of original work showing breadth of ability. International students may submit their portfolio digitally

Bachelor of Fine Arts: Honours

  • A GPA of their final undergraduate year (Level 7 credits) of B - and above (GPA of 4)
  • A portfolio that reflects your skills and potential to successfully complete the programme

  • Academic writing ability which reflects the potential for successful study at the graduate level (applicants may use their letter of intent or research declaration or examples of previous academic writing to meet this requirement)

  • Official transcripts of a Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) and/or other academic qualifications
  • Portfolio: A typical portfolio comprises of 10-15 digital images of key works or projects and one or two examples of contextual research in written form (digital format only required for application)
  • A current curriculum vitae
  • Three referee contact details
  • A statement of intent outlining the direction/emphasis of the work they wish to develop as part of the MFA programme

International Student Entry Requirements:

  • Completed application form
  • Passport copy
  • Minimum age: Students must turn 18 within their first year of study at Whitecliffe
  • IELTS Academic overall score of 6.5 with no band less than 6.0 or equivalent

Eligibility for entrance into the Postgraduate Diploma in Arts Therapy
Please note, we do not accept direct applications for the Master of Arts in Arts Therapy (Clinical) programme. Students must complete the Postgraduate Diploma in Arts Therapy as part of their learning path into the Master of Arts in Arts Therapy (Clinical).

  • Students must have completed the Level 3 Certificate in Apparel and Fashion Technology qualification or be able to demonstrate:

  • An entry exam may be required to test the applicants literacy, numeracy, pattern recognition, garment construction, sequencing, and sewing skills

International Student Entry Requirements:

  • Completed application form
  • Passport copy
  • Minimum age: Students must turn 18 within their first year of study at Whitecliffe
  • IELTS Academic overall score of 5.5 with no band less than 5.0 or equivalent English proficiency as follows:
    • TOEFL paper-based minimum score of 530 (with an essay score of 4.5 TWE) Test (pBT) where the test was carried out prior to 01 October 2017; or
    • TOEFL internet-based test minimum score of 46, with a writing score no lower than 4.5 TWE; or
    • Cambridge English qualifications with B2 First or B2 First for Schools with a score of 162, no less than 154 in each skill


Certificate in Information Technology

NZQF Level 5, 60 credits
Taught at: Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch campuses

Domestic Student Entry Requirements:

  • Minimum age: Students must turn 17 within their first year of study at Whitecliffe
  • 42 credits at NCEA Level 3 including:
    • 14 credits in Digital Technologies or Computing AND
    • 10 credits in Maths AND
    • 10 credits in English at NCEA Level 2 or above

  • Minimum age: Students must turn 17 within their first year of study at Whitecliffe
  • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to undertake degree-level study, including appropriate knowledge and skills in the areas of written communication and mathematics, by having achieved:
    • Certificate in IT Essentials or
    • A New Zealand or overseas qualification assessed to be equivalent to the above by the Programme Director or
    • Passes in other Certificate/Diploma qualifications or courses as considered appropriate by the Programme Director.

Please note:

  • Applicants who do not meet the above criteria may be eligible for admission with the approval of the Programme Director
  • Applicants for the Bachelor of Applied Information Technology are required to attend an interview

  • Special consideration may be offered for admission by the Deputy Chief Executive Academic based on evidence of academic capability and work experience
