Master of Information Technology (Data Science)

Originally from Vietnam, Ba Ton is currently in his final term of the Master of Information Technology at Whitecliffe in Auckland, New Zealand, specialising in Data Science.

With more than 14 years of experience in Software Engineering, Ba Ton decided to return to study to deepen his expertise in Data Science, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Cloud Computing, while also gaining international experience in New Zealand’s evolving technology landscape.

Reflecting on his decision, Ba Ton shares that the programme offered an opportunity to build on his existing technical foundation while expanding into emerging areas shaping the future of the industry.

“I decided to pursue this programme to strengthen my knowledge in Data and AI technologies, and to broaden my global perspective.”

For Ba Ton, studying at postgraduate level has been both a continuation of his professional journey and a way to reposition himself within a rapidly advancing global tech environment.

One of the defining aspects of the Whitecliffe Master of Information Technology programme is its emphasis on applied, real-world learning.

Ba Ton describes the experience as highly practical, allowing him to connect theory directly to industry applications.

“The coursework is very hands-on, which allows me to apply both my experience and what I learn to real-world scenarios.”

This approach enables students to develop capabilities across key areas such as:

• Data Science and Machine Learning

• Artificial Intelligence and intelligent systems

• Cloud Computing and Data Engineering

• Scalable software and systems development

By integrating industry-relevant projects into the curriculum, the programme supports students in building both technical depth and practical problem-solving skills that are critical for careers in today’s technology sector

Beyond technical capability, Ba Ton highlights the importance of the learning environment at Whitecliffe, particularly for international students studying IT in New Zealand.

“The lecturers are very approachable, and the classes encourage collaboration and critical thinking.”

Working alongside a diverse cohort has also strengthened his ability to communicate and collaborate across cultures – an essential skill in global technology teams.
