Since joining Whitecliffe in 2019, Quinn Weekes has built his journey step by step — progressing from a Level 5 Certificate in IT through to a Master’s qualification. Along the way, he has completed multiple programmes across networking, cyber security, and software development, shaping a well-rounded foundation in the field.
His path into IT began as an adult learner after completing a Level 2 National Certificate in Computing in Wellington. With a strong interest in technology and a focus on future employment opportunities, Quinn decided to continue his studies at Whitecliffe.
“I found that having a structured programme and access to resources made a big difference. If you worked through the course material and exercises consistently, you had a good chance of completing assessments successfully,” he shares.
For Quinn, progression through each programme wasn’t just about completing qualifications; it was about building understanding.
“The IT pathway builds on itself, especially in networking and cyber security. That structure was important to me. It gave me the context I needed to keep moving forward.”
Throughout his time at Whitecliffe, flexibility and access to support played a key role in his experience. Being able to connect with lecturers, clearly interpret assessment requirements, and access learning materials online allowed him to stay consistent in his studies.
One of the biggest challenges he faced was developing his academic writing skills.
Quinn wanted to apply his own narrative style to the written work. Doing the coursework, watching video courses, doing exercises or quizzes, and reading aids in building knowledge on which to enrich his understanding of the topic that he could then communicate using academic tools like charts, tables, graphs, lists, and matrices in documentation to support and evidence his findings.
“Learning how to interpret information and put it into your own words was important, especially when working with digital content and AI tools. It took time, but working through the course material helped me build that skill.”
Quinn’s journey also reflects a high level of perseverance, as he continued his studies while managing personal challenges – a reminder of the importance of consistency, structure, and support in achieving long-term goals.
Now, as he looks ahead, Quinn is focused on taking the next step into industry.
He has applied for a graduate programme to continue building his skills in a real-world environment.
