Bachelor in Jewellery Design and Technology

Denise Callan’s transformative journey from a 25-year hiatus to becoming an award-winning contemporary jewellery artist and lecturer at Whitecliffe highlights the profound impact of lifelong learning and passion. Now a key faculty member, Denise inspires new generations of creatives through her role at Whitecliffe, where she teaches and mentors emerging artists.

“My jewellery making journey has been lifechanging,” Denise shares. She emphasizes the personal and cultural significance of jewellery, which she explores through her unique pieces showcased in exhibitions like her recent solo show ‘Dear Public’ and the group show ‘Proof of Concept’ at Depot Artspace. Her work challenges conventional materials and forms, drawing on human experiences and social constructs.

Denise credits her success to the rigorous education and real-world opportunities provided by Whitecliffe’s Bachelor of Jewellery Design and Technology programme. “The programme was pivotal; it turned theoretical knowledge into real-world skills,” she remarks. This hands-on experience is something she now passes on to her students in the Level 4 Certificate in Jewellery course. “Many students start with no knowledge of making jewellery, and by the end of the course, they can create anything.”

Denise’s advice for anyone considering a career in jewellery is compelling: “Give it a go! You don’t know what’s possible until you start.” Her story is not just about creating beautiful pieces but also building resilience and discovering one’s potential through the art of jewellery making.
