Becky Nunes graduated with a BFA (Hons.) in film and literature from Warwick University. Nunes also holds an MFA in photography, First Class Honours, from Whitecliffe. She is an NZIPP Master of photography. Becky is a founding member of photography collective Tangent.
A respected commercial and editorial photographer, Becky has worked with numerous publishers, designers and advertising agencies over a substantial period of time. Her images have won awards and been published locally and overseas.
In 2008 Becky made over 50 portraits for the significant publication “Mau Moko -The world of Maori tattoo”, published by Penguin NZ. This body of work has subsequently been shown at the Gus Fisher gallery in Auckland as well as internationally, travelling to museums in Switzerland and Hamburg.
Becky has worked closely with the Tainuiu iwi to photograph the architecture and objects of the Kingiitanga collection, as well as making portraits of Tainui and Te Arawa iwi for Turanagwaewae House.
Her work has been shown in both group and solo exhibitions, and is held in several private collections. In 2012 and 2014 Becky was a finalist in the national Wallace Art Awards. In 2013-14 her work was accepted into the Te Tuhi billboard program of exhibitions. This engagement with ideas of taonga, cultural identity and their relationship to place continues to be reflected in her own ongoing practice.
