Vanguard Awards + Exhibition

The Whitecliffe Vanguard Creative Awards and Exhibition is an opportunity for emerging Design, Photography, and Art students to showcase their talents on a national scale.

PRIZES

The winner of each category will win a 50% scholarship to study at Whitecliffe (valued at $4500), $1000 for their school, and will also exhibit their work in Whitecliffe’s Form Gallery at the Vanguard Exhibition.

Design Innovation

Do you love to create visual content to communicate your message? Whether it is a web- or digital design, a magazine layout, logos, fonts, product packaging, apparel designs or more we want to see it.

We are looking for work that is your own – based off original thoughts and concepts that you have created yourself.

Please submit between 3 – 10 images that represent your breadth of work as an innovative designer. Ideally, we’d like your images to be in JPEG or PNG format in RGB colour mode.

Photo Media

Whether you love shooting landscapes, architecture, lifestyle, portraits, travel or abstract work, we want to see it.

We are looking for work that is your own – based off original thoughts and concepts that you’ve created yourself.

Please submit between 3 – 10 images or moving image works that represent your breadth of work as a lens based artist. Submit your images either as JPEGs or as mp4 files.

Fine Art

Whether you love to paint, draw, print, sculpt, or work across other media we want to see it!

We are looking for work that is your own – based off original thoughts and concepts that you’ve created yourself.

Please submit between 3 – 10 images or moving image works that represent your breadth of work as an artist. Submit your images either as JPEGs or as mp4 files.

HOW TO ENTER

Entering is easy! All you need to do is email your entry (PDF) to admissions@whitecliffe.ac.nz

Make sure you include your contact details and school the title of your work and the category you are wishing to enter. Please feel free to add a short description of your work in the body of the email.

Remember, we are looking for work that is your own – based off original thoughts and concepts that you’ve created yourself. Have fun with it!

JUDGING PANEL

Eric Thompson Head of the School - Design Innovation

Eric has been a practicing designer for 25 years and an educator for the past 11 years and holds a Master of Design. He has worked in New Zealand and England, where he had his own design agency in London for eight years. Eric also worked in Australia as the Director of Innovation, Industry and Employability for the Design Vertical at Torrens University. He is an award-winning designer, lecturer, journalist and a best-selling author. Eric has also taken part on various national and international design discussion panels and facilitated several successful design hackathons and hosted a Vlog (video log) on creativity.

Dave Cowlard Programme Leader – Photo Media

David is a documentary and editorial photographer, digital producer, writer and field recordist. He is widely published internationally and has worked for leading architectural and design magazines in the UK, Europe and the US.

Before relocating to Auckland, he taught at several educational institutions including the Architecture Association in London, the University of Brighton and Camberwell College of Art & Design.

Matt Ellwood Head of the School - Fine Arts

Matt’s work is about the psychology of desire and interrogating the artificially constructed sociological relationships within advertising and merchandising.

He is the recipient of many awards and residencies including the New York ISCP studio residency and is profiled in New York via the Drawing Center’s viewing program. He has exhibited at the Headlands Sculpture on the Gulf events on Waiheke Island, and is represented in Auckland by Melanie Roger Gallery.

TERMS & CONDITIONS

  • To enter you must be a New Zealand resident enrolled at a secondary school in years 11-13
  • All work must be original work of the applicant.
  • Application process is open.
  • Whitecliffe reserves the right to request proof of age and identity of the applicant and /or recipient of a scholarship.
  • All intellectual property remains the right of the applicant, though Whitecliffe may use the images, with proper accreditation of the applicant for Marketing purposes.
  • Judging will take place in September at the Vanguard Exhibition
  • The selection committee consists of Whitecliffe staff and an external industry expert.
  • Whitecliffe is not responsible nor liable for late, lost or misdirected applications, or applications not received by Whitecliffe for any reason whatsoever. Applicants should not send in original copies of their work. No responsibility will be taken by Whitecliffe in any event of the original application being lost or damaged.
  • The successful applicants will be notified by October 1st, 2021.
  • Whitecliffe reserves the right to extend, change or terminate the Vanguard Awards and Vanguard Exhibition at any time without prior notice. Winners will be notified by email and their respective schools will be notified by email on the day on which the award winners are announced or as soon as possible thereafter.
  • The prizes awarded are not transferable or exchangeable.
  • The scholarship offers half-year (60 credits) of fees for consecutive study. Should the applicant be eligible for the Government’s Fees-free scheme, the scholarship will apply to the second year of study (or first year of study not covered by the Fees-free scheme)
  • The scholarship must be used within 1 year of completing their high school study.
  • By accepting the grant, winners are required to participate in the following: complete written blog material, appear in marketing videos, represent Whitecliffe as a brand ambassador, take part in marketing initiatives or events (such as open days, information evenings, workshops) and provide testimonials when required.
  • Successful applicants will be acting as brand ambassadors for Whitecliffe. Any breach of conduct which impacts the Whitecliffe brand and it students will lead Whitecliffe withdrawing the scholarship. The successful applicant is responsible for their own actions and behaviour and Whitecliffe accept no liability for those actions.
