PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY (WEEKEND)

resized 6_1

TUTOR: EMILY RAFTERY

An introductory course to portrait photography using available, natural light sources in the best ways possible. This course is designed for students who have an interest in photographing people, whether it is commercially - fashion, editorial or portraiture, or for creating, and further exploring their own personal portraiture projects. All levels of skill welcome, beginner to advanced, just a keen interest in people, as subjects are required.

Technical basics will be covered: understanding of basic use of DSLR camera’s (note: I am a Canon user, specific technical Nikon knowledge may be limited) reading and working with available light, lens selection for each specific subject/job, framing and composition rules when working with people, then onto image processing and workflows with specific focus on Lightroom cataloguing and editing.

The weekend will see you create your own mini body of work using your own cameras to explore with full creative freedom after having a better understanding of the variety of techniques that we cover.

PLEASE BRING THE FOLLOWING MATERIALS TO THE COURSE:

- DSLR camera of choice (with charged battery, cords, cables, camera card, instruction manual), Emily can work with film too (if there is interest)

- USB stick or external hard drive (if you have one)

- notebook and pen

- no need to bring your laptop. Mac computers are provided.

About Emily Raftery:

Emily Raftery is a full time wedding and portrait photographer from Auckland, who occasionally dabbles in a bit of fashion photography, and has a rather extensive collection of janky old film cameras she uses for her personal portraiture work. After completing a BFA at Whitecliffe 13 years ago, she has been working in the industry ever since running her own photography business. Her natural, relaxed style of image creating leans towards a documentary approach. Being an available light lover and believing passionately in authentic image making, guides her focus.
