Richard Maloy has been selected for the Encounters sector of the Art Basel Hong Kong Art Fair opening 24 March. The display of large-scale works includes 16 prominent artists from 12 countries - Lawrence Weiner, Isa Genzken, Zhang Ding and Charles Avery to name a few. Encounters is curated by Alexie Glass-Kantor, Executive Director of Artspace Sydney.
Maloy utilized Whitecliffe’s Pearce Gallery as an open studio space to develop and work on his large-scale artwork entitled Yellow Structure. To retain the performative act of art making, he worked with primary materials such as cardboard, paint and tape, transforming the materials into the final art piece. Yellow Structure is an extension of his multiple cardboard construction works, which have been exhibited at public museums and galleries in New Zealand and Australia, including Artspace Auckland, City Gallery Wellington, Scape Biennial of Art (Christchurch), Gertrude Contemporary (Melbourne), Gallery of Modern Art (Brisbane) and the Centre of Contemporary Art (Christchurch). The works were shipped on 2 March from Pearce Gallery to Hong Kong for installation at the fair.
