Fashion: Creative Visible Mending and Garment Repair
Creative Visible Mending and Garment Repair
- Start Date: 5th October 2022
- Duration: 10 weeks. 1 class per week, 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm
- Fees: $450
- Requirements: Students are encouraged to bring their own garments in for repair in the final 5 weeks of the course. Participants can bring in their own needles, fabric, thread, and thimble if they wish, however materials will be provided.
This course focuses on the art of visible garment repairs. Participants will engage in creative exercises to learn and develop hand-sewing techniques for garment mending applications. Repair techniques will include, patching, Sashiko-inspired hand stitching and darning. Students will complete the course empowered with the skills to creatively repair their own garments. Classes in the final weeks will focus on repair sessions, where skills learned throughout the course will be applied to damaged garments, to celebrate longevity and the beauty of use.
This class will be taught by Whitecliffe BFA Fashion Design Graduate Jessica Jay. Since graduating in 2018, Jess has worked across diverse roles in the local fashion industry extending her skills in garment sampling, construction and pattern making. In 2021, Jess established her own business, Reparation Studio, specialising in artisanal garment repairs and alterations.

Fashion: Creative Fashion Building Blocks
Creative Fashion Building Blocks
- Start Date: 26th April 2023
- Duration: 10 weeks. 1 class per week, 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm
- Fees: $450
This course offers insight into industry standards of garment construction, with students taken through the complete process of creating one selected garment for their own keeping. The lessons will work chronologically through the stages of pattern making, from correctly calculating measurements to producing patterns, to cutting and sewing the final garment. Through this 10-week course, students will learn crucial precepts of garment construction, aiming to equip them with a baseline understanding of fashion fundamentals. This course is great for anyone wanting to begin their journey into fashion, and who wishes to understand preliminary patternmaking skills that they can apply to further their own creative voice.
This class will be taught by Nicole van Vuuren.
Nicole is a fashion designer who runs both her own label 'Nicole van Vuuren' and creative studio and showroom 'NVV World'. She graduated from RMIT University, Melbourne with a Bachelor of Fashion with Honours in 2015 and worked as a pattern maker in Melbourne, New York, and Auckland before launching her own label. She has a well-rounded understanding of the industry and technical knowledge. Her own practice is grounded in sustainability and waste minimisation within the industry explored in an elevated fashion context. She is passionate about teaching and excited to engage with the next generation of fashion makers.

Fashion: Fashion Illustration
Fashion Illustration

- Duration: 4 weeks. 1 class per week, 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Whether art is your career or your hobby, learn how to illustrate your favourite runway looks. If you want to reclaim your creativity, and learn how to paint with confidence, as a complete beginner, or for an artist who wants to sharpen their current skills with new ones, this class is for you. This class will give you the tools and confidence to bring your fashion dreams to life. You will learn how to draw a fashion figure, proportions, faces, hairstyles, render using watercolours, how to draw clothes, and a lot more.
So come along and craft a stylish illustration that stands out.
This class will be taught by Nalini Nalini
As a New Zealand registered secondary and tertiary tutor, Nalini has extensive experience ranging from teaching fashion drawing and illustration to designing and marketing her garments. She works in various mediums including acrylics, oils, and watercolours.
All material is provided though you're welcome to bring your own.

Jewellery: Learn to Make Jewellery
Learn to Make Jewellery
- Start Date: 26th April 2023
- Duration: 10 weeks. 1 class per week, 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm
- Fees: $525
- *Does not include cost for gemstone setting and/or casting, which is variable and depends on each student’s specific project.
- Requirements: Please bring a bib apron (every week), wear closed-toe shoes, and tie up long hair.
Experience the wonderful world of making jewellery.
Head straight into making jewellery right from the first night. Your tutor will teach you how to use a wide selection of tools and a range of manufacturing techniques. You will learn to make standard pieces as well as your own customised designs.
This class will be taught by Josiah and Elicia.
Josiah Riedel is a graduate in Bachelor of Jewellery Design & Technology. He is currently working with Louis the Goldsmith, in Parnell. He is experienced in handling and working with different metals and also works with Computer Aided Designs (CAD). Jos is an easy-going, friendly tutor always eager to share his knowledge of jewellery and impart skills to newbies.
Elicia Hunt has an Advanced Diploma in Jewellery Design from the Hungry Creek School of Art & Craft. She is currently working as Store Manager with the Royal Jewellery Studio in Kingsland. Elicia has also exhibited her work in a number of exhibitions and shows. She is cheerful, people-oriented person, always willing to work with new learners in the field of Jewellery.
