Asia New Zealand Foundation Residency awarded to Hikalu Clarke

Hikalu Clarke who graduated with his MFA in 2017 and completed the prestigious Gasworks Residency in London in November 2018 – January 2019, has recently been awarded an Asia New Zealand Foundation Residency at Yokobo Arts Centre, Tokyo, Japan which will run from September – November 2019.

The residency is funded by Creative New Zealand and the Asia New Zealand Foundation Arts Practitioners Fund “which gives support for experiential opportunities for New Zealand-based arts practitioners to deepen artistic and professional connections with Asia, including residencies, work placements, research tours and exchanges.”

Hikalu’s practice investigates the way that urban architecture and design carefully manages the movement and potential aggregation of people. Addressing such phenomena as counter-terrorist architecture, Hikalu seeks to highlight how seemingly innocuous urban structures quietly deliver a form of civil management. Residencies in first London and now Tokyo provide invaluable opportunities to research first hand two of the most significant cities on the planet.
