Guest Speaker: Aaron Lister

Aaron Lister, curator at the City Gallery in Wellington, is our Guest and External Examiner for the Whitecliffe MFA programme’s January seminar themed Art as Research.

Aaron has worked on artist projects such as Yona Lee: In Transit and Patrick Pound: On Reflection (both 2018); solo exhibitions: Cao Fei: #18 (2018), Petra Cortright: Running Neo-Geo Games under Mame (2017), Fiona Pardington: A Beautiful Hesitation (2016), Ben Cauchi: The Sophist’s Mirror (2015); and a number of group/thematic exhibitions such as Occulture: The Dark Arts (2017), Demented Architecture (2016), Other People’s Photographs: From the collection of Cindy Sherman (2016), and From the one I call my own: Shannon Te Ao and Susan Te Kahurangi King. Working at City Gallery Wellington has enabled Aaron to work with a number of high profile international artists, including: Simon Starling, Cindy Sherman, Gregory Crewdson and Meiro Koizumi.

Aaron was previously Exhibitions Curator at the National Library of New Zealand, and has also lectured in Art History departments of Victoria University of Wellington and The University of Otago. He has written widely on New Zealand and international art and artists for a variety of publications and journals. Aaron is the Board Chair for CIRCUIT Artist Film and Video Aotearoa New Zealand, and is an Arts Advisor to the Wellington Sculpture Trust and Wellington City Council.
