Matt Ellwood completed his undergraduate studies at Auckland University’s Elam School of Fine Arts in1996 and has a PgDip in Teaching from Auckland College of Education. He graduated with a Master of Fine Arts (1st class honours) from Elam in 2003. Matt has exhibited widely in New Zealand, Australia, and the United States, and was awarded the Wallace Trust Development Award and New York ISCP studio residency in 2004. He is also included in art publications such as ‘new New Zealand Art’ 2002 and Warwick Brown’s ‘Seen This Century’ 2009. Matt recently released a limited edition artist book entitled ‘BOY’. Released through Michael Lett publishing and S/F books, it was created through the funding support of Whitecliffe College and Creative New Zealand. Matt Ellwood is represented by Michael Lett gallery in Auckland and is profiled in New York at the Drawing Center’s online viewing program. Matt explains his work as being about the psychology of desire and the artificially constructed human relationships within advertising and merchandising. His key area of research has been 1970’s men’s magazines, movies and cigarette adverts but more recently, contemporary New Zealand chain store promotional material and Auckland Sunday papers. He has been a Senior Lecturer in the Fine Arts department at Whitecliffe since 2006, and became HOD Fine Arts in 2017.
