Lloyd Williams has directed the MA in Arts Management at Whitecliffe since 2004. Lloyd trained as a primary school teacher with specialist qualifications in music at Auckland and Hamilton Teachers’ Colleges, and taught in primary schools for three years while working towards his B.Mus at Canterbury University. After carrying on to complete an Honours degree in Music, majoring in music education, Lloyd moved to Hamilton to take up a post as Music Adviser to the South Auckland Education Board. A further term of two years lecturing at Hamilton Teachers’ College was completed before Lloyd turned his attention to performance on the double bass. This led to a full-time position in the double bass section of the Auckland Philharmonia where he stayed for 20 years, the last six of these years as General Manager of the staff of 17 and orchestra of 65. During Lloyd’s eight years at Whitecliffe he has served on several not-for-profit governance boards including the Michael Hill International Violin Competition, Chair of SOUNZ, the Centre for New Zealand Music, Parnell Community Trust, The Arts Foundation of New Zealand, of which he is currently Chair of the College of Governors, and the Auckland Town Hall Restoration Advisory Board. In 2006 Lloyd and a small group of arts lovers launched the Arts Channel screened through the Sky Network. Lloyd has a PhD in Music from the University of Auckland. His dissertation is entitled Organizational Change in Symphony Orchestras.
