TUTOR: KATIE SMITH
Textile design is central to the worlds of fashion and interiors. In this course, you will develop a personal creative identity in pattern design and learn how to screen-print these concepts using simple stencilling and masking techniques. You will gain an understanding of the professional context and practice of textile design and learn the technical skills required to articulate your ideas.
Katie Smith, textile designer from Smitten Design, will introduce you to a designer’s approach and process by researching innovative and contemporary designs for fashion and interiors. We will look at key historical events in art and design movements which have impacted on textile design – such as Bauhaus, Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau and digital technology.
By the end of the course, you will have produced a collection of printed samples, developed ideas through drawing and repeat pattern skills, created your own colour pallet and mood-board as well as learnt how to mix dye colours and experimented with different textile printing methods.
Note from Tutor:
Each session will cover new techniques and processes in printing and pattern design. It is recommended that students enrolled in this class are committed to attending every class.
The course is 6 weeks long but runs over 7 weeks with a break on week 4. There will be a short research assignment to complete over this week.

About Katie Smith:
Katie Smith has been working with fabric in one way or another all my life. From clothes to interiors to conceptual art, she has always been fascinated by the power of fabric to transform places, spaces and people. Katie works in her studio in West Auckland, where she is inspired by the wild mash-up of urban industrial spaces and the forest clad Waitakere ranges. She loves synthesising these disparate influences into printable motifs.
Katie relishes in the uniqueness of hand printing and exploring its numerous possibilities. She graduated with an M.A in Textile Art from Goldsmiths University of London, in 1995, and prior to this, she studied textiles at Otago Polytechnic in Dunedin. She likes to keep her work simple, spontaneous and contemporary. She loves sharing her knowledge and passion for textiles and has run numerous print workshops for adult and children.
