Creativity & Me - Creativity for Wellbeing

TUTOR: JULIA HANNA & WENDY LAWSON

"Creativity & Me" is a course taught by two qualified Arts Therapists. This is not a course to be trained to become an Arts Therapist, but rather a course to experience different ways of art making based on the idea of creativity for well-being.

The course offers an experience in art making for personal growth and creative well-being. Arts therapy concepts are woven into the class with a sense of freedom and curiosity at the core of this explorative, creative journey. All materials are provided.

The sessions offer a predominantly open studio structure where participants can follow their own interests, experiment with art materials and work at their own pace, attention is not directed to acquiring fine art skills. A non-judgmental environment is established in support of this, as participants ignite or reignite their relationship with creativity.

Art supplies are used as tools for self-expression with no right or wrong way to make art or use the materials. Using a range of art mediums and art activities, participants are encouraged to be open to the art making experiences and all its possibilities; to use their imagination, push boundaries within the art-making process, take creative risks, to make connections with others, the art materials, the art form and themselves.

Some structured art making experiences are offered so as to invite a deeper awareness of personal growth and creative potentials such as the significance of symbols, positive emotions, engagement and meaning making. There are also opportunities to inquire, share, and reflect on the creative experience either as a group or independently through writing and journaling.

By the end of the programme, participants will have developed confidence with a range of art materials and techniques, gained an appreciation of their own inherent creativity and will have acquired skills to carry on their creative enquiry in the future.

Each session will start with a warm-up and a group ice-breaker activity. Then different topics will be explored in an open studio format, using mixed media. Session topics are Symbols & Metaphors, Self & Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Making Meanings, and Accomplishments.

Note from the Tutors:

The creative well-being class is not a traditional art class. Facilitators do not teach particular art techniques such as figurative drawing but instead assist each participant to develop and appreciate their own creative process and make meaning from this. The programme supports individual work with opportunities for participation in group discussion and shared experiences. An openness to working with others and self-directed art making is desirable. All art materials will be provided, however, students may be required to bring some natural or found objects from home. Students should provide their own aprons or art shirt.

THE 6 WEEKS COURSE WILL RUN OVER 7 WEEKS FROM MONDAY EVENING 18 SEPTEMBER TO MONDAY 30 OCTOBER (NO CLASS ON 23 OCTOBER)

EACH CLASS WILL START AT 6PM AND FINISH AT 9PM.
