Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design, New Zealand's leading private arts
and design institution, is proud to offer evening classes to our community.
Courses provide quality teaching, an exposure to the world of contemporary
art practice, and individualised tuition in a positive learning environment.
Our aim is to make art and design accessible to any individual who is willing
to develop their skills, explore their creativity, encounter new ideas and ways
of working, and revitalise their practice.
Terms at Whitecliffe run over a seven week period, but evening courses
consist of six classes which run from 6pm - 9pm on Tuesday, Wednesday or
Thursday evenings. Each class will therefore have a one week break in the
fourth week of classes when Whitecliffe Undergraduate Workshops are run. If a
class needs to be cancelled, it will run on the next available day or by
arrangement between the tutors and students. Classes only proceesd if there are
the required minimum number of enrolments.
DAY & WEEKEND WORKSHOPS
This term, the Short Course programme is being extended to include a range
of Day Classes and Workshops which are scheduled in weekends and during our mid
semester break, coinciding with Secondary School holidays. Classes are not
designed as a school holiday programme however, mature school students who are
aged 14 or over may be permitted to enrol. The Weekend Workshops are either
over a full weekend or are on consecutive Saturdays, enabling students who are
not able to attend in the evenings the opportunity to enjoy classes at
Whitecliffe. These full day classes will run from 9.30am - 4 pm
Materials
A material list will be provided upon confirmation of the course.
Eligibility
All Short Courses are non-credit and are open to all ages. However, some
courses are challenging, therefore we recommend that applicants under the age
of 18 years contact the office if uncertain about their eligibility. No
qualifications are necessary unless experience is specified in the course
description.
Location
All classes take place at our main Campus, located at 24 Balfour Rd in
Parnell off Gladstone Rd, one block from the Parnell Rose Gardens. On-street
parking is available on Balfour Rd.
Building Access
For your security, the Whitecliffe Balfour Road Campus is protected by a
swipe card access system. As part of your fees, you will be allocated a swipe
card on the first night of course, granting you access during your scheduled
classes. Should a student require a replacement card, or fail to return this
swipe card at the end of the course, a replacement fee of $25 will be
incurred.
Refunds
You may request to withdraw from a course up to 3 working days prior to the
commencement of a course and gain a full refund. Refunds will not be given to
students withdrawing after the commencement of a course. Fees cannot be
transferred to future bookings.
Booking and Course Cancellation
In order to confirm your place, full payment is required at the time of
booking - no deposits taken. Whitecliffe reserves the right to cancel or
postpone any course that does not reach a viable number of enrolments. In this
case you will receive a full refund. Whitecliffe reserves the right to amend
any course, schedule, location or tutor listed in the brochure before or during
the course.
Students
Please note that on the enrolment form you are required to notify
Whitecliffe of any existing medical condition or disability that may affect
your participation in a course. The information supplied to Whitecliffe is
required to manage your enrolment and participation. No personal information
will be disclosed outside Whitecliffe without your expressed consent, except
where required by law.

EVENING CLASSES
FASHION DESIGN - ONE
This course introduces students to the general aspects of fashion design.
Students will develop knowledge of the fashion industry and foster their
creativity through experimentation within the discipline.
Students will be introduced to the process of creating their own design and
will be shown how to translate that concept to a completed garment by learning
pattern drafting and garment construction. During the garment construction
process students will use industrial machines, experiment with surface design
and embellishment, and learn how to employ different fabric manipulation
techniques.
This course is suitable for beginners and for those with some
experience.

Term 3: 20 July - 31 August (no class 10 August)
Cost: $250.00 per term
FASHION DESIGN - TWO
Students that have already completed the Wednesday course or are
sufficiently experienced will be taught further skills in basic pattern making.
Students will design and complete a garment in calico and using industrial
machines they will learn garment construction elements such as darts, cuffs,
collars, facing, button stand, patch pocket and insertion of zips. This course
will expand on the techniques of surface design, embellishment and fabric
manipulation that were taught in Fashion Design One.
This course is suitable for intermediate students.

Tutor: Anja Lundin. graduated from Whitecliffe College of Arts and
Design in 2002 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts majoring in Fashion Design. She has
worked in a variety of fields with in the fashion industry and currently
teaches in the Fashion Design Department at Whitecliffe.

IMPRESSIONIST LANDSCAPE PAINTING
This course is offered to beginner or intermediate level students who would
like to learn to paint representational landscapes in an impressionist style.
Students are free to utilise and adapt this painting style for other preferred
subject matters.
Students will be taught the fundamental principles of paint application to
achieve atmospheric perspective and dimension and will be shown how warm and
cool colours are used by professional artists to create depth in a painting and
also how to mix colour to change tonal values. Most importantly, Steve will
show students the four key things you need to know about composing and creating
a successful landscape painting.
The preferred medium is oils but students may also use acrylics.

Tutor: Steve Marsh has a Diploma in Figurative Studies from Whitecliffe
College Of Arts and Design 1986 and has been an exhibiting artist for over 20
years. He teaches part time and has paintings in private collections in New
Zealand, Australia, Sweden and Wales. His current works explore the way light
appears in nature as he takes life as his inspiration.

FIGURATIVE DRAWING: FASHION or ILLUSTRATION
Students in this course will be taught the basic skills of figurative
drawing either for the purpose of Fashion Design or for Illustration. The class
will be adapted to your strengths and whichever of these two disciplines you
wish to develop.
Fashion Illustration: students will be shown how to structure the figure as
a coat hanger for fashion drapery where the figure is elongated to create the
desired elegance and beauty that best presents a design concept.
Figure Illustration: students will be shown the skills required to
accurately and sensitively draw a life figure using personally selected
photographic images for the subject matter.

BEGINNER DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
This introductory course enables students to explore their digital camera
functions through lots of hands on experimentation. The digital process will be
examined including down loading, archiving and printing methods. Using
Photoshop® students will learn to manipulate and enhance their images as
well as utilise tools for more creative applications. The photographic lighting
studio will be used for commercial lighting demonstrations

INTERMEDIATE DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
A course designed as a follow on extension of the Introduction to Digital
Photography class. Suitable to those with a sound knowledge of manual SLR
camera functions and that have used Photoshop CS4 previously.
Through your expanding image library we will fine tune your area of
interest. Complimenting this will be more in depth Photoshop® activities
including High Dynamic Range Photography. The photographic studio will also be
utilised to aid you with your weekly independent creative image capturing
tasks.

Tutor: Treve Dromgool graduated from Whitecliffe in 2002 with a
Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree majoring in Photography. She has since been
immersed in the photographic industry, practicing as a medical photographer,
working freelance, exhibiting, and teaching.

ABSTRACT PAINTING
James Lawrence is a well known painter and tutor and one of New Zealand's
great modern artists. Students will have the opportunity to improve current
painting skills or learn from scratch functional, original, resourceful acrylic
techniques. The classes will cover design, colour and texture, utilising
demonstrations and practical creative exercises. Students will be able to
develop their own style with individual direction from James.
This workshop is suitable for beginners and advanced artists

Tutor: James Lawrence completed his BFA and MFA at the Otis
College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. He has been based in New Zealand
since 1992 where he has been a very respected and successful exhibiting artist
and lecturer. James has taught BFA and Foundation students at Whitecliffe and
has conducted workshops and classes throughout New Zealand.

INTRODUCTION TO ADOBE PHOTOSHOP CS4
Photoshop is the professional standard in digital imaging, with an endless
selection of drawing tools, filters, and colour-adjustment capabilities for
manipulating items in almost any way. Photoshop has become an indispensable
tool for all creative professionals.
This course will teach you a broad spectrum of core skills that are common
to many creative fields. You will learn how to work with layers and selections,
how to adjust, manipulate and retouch photos. You will also learn how to use
the paint tools, add text, prepare files for output, and much more.
This course is suitable to those who are new to the application, just
learning this version, or expanding their skills.
Prerequisites: Before enrolling on this course,
participants should have basic computer skills including mouse operation,
creating folders, creating files and savings files into folders.

EXPRESSIVE PAINTING
An expressive painting class for beginners which incorporates mixed media,
symbolism, and a focus on contemporary culture. Students will have the freedom
to explore this genre under the assured guidance of the tutor. An opportunity
to be really creative with a variety of mediums.

Tutor: Alissa West currently lectures at Whitecliffe. Alissa has a
BFA and will graduate with her MFA from Whitecliffe in January 2010. Her art
practice is informed by European art history and she use these works in
dialogue with contemporary culture

OBJECT ART
Reinvent accessories such as handbags and shoes from your wardrobe into
Object Art. Students will initially be introduced to object art ideas and will
then recreate a high heeled shoe into a Kiwiana theme "Paua Shoe" utilising
paua and glass beads, in conjunction with other materials. The class will
progress into research, and students will be able to sketch and design
individual ideas of theme or fantasy, then using a wide variety of materials
from paint, collage and fabric, to create a second object of their choice.

Tutor: Nikki Hill graduated from Elam in 2008 with a
Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons) majoring in Digital Studio Photography. She had
extensive previous experience in a number of fields including Graphic Design,
Stylist, Retail display and Photography. Nikki is an exhibiting artist and has
been a finalist in the Wallace Trust Art Award.

INTRODUCTION TO DRAWING
This course explores three dimensional drawing. Students will learn a range
of technical drawing techniques to concisely and clearly transform an idea into
physical form, such as perspective, isometric, and orthographic drawing. It
will then move to more improvisational methods using a range of materials to
address the fundamental issues of working sculpturally and spatially gaining an
understanding of form, scale, balance and space with reference to the body and
its surroundings.

Tutor: Sarah Rose graduated from Elam School of Fine Arts, University of
Auckland in 2007 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Recent exhibitions include "To
Say the Least" Newcall Gallery,Auckland, "New Artists Show 2009"
Artspace,Auckland, "Leading to Form" Enjoy Public Art Gallery,Wellington.
Sarah is currently a co-director of the artist-run-space Newcall Gallery.

DAY CLASSES & WEEKEND WORKSHOPS
MILLINERY
TWO DAY MID SEMESTER WORKSHOP
An opportunity to learn elementary millinery skills from Ailie Miller
who is well known through out New Zealand for her much admired original
creations under the Dollie Vardin label. Students will make a small modern
fabric hat or cocktail hat that compliments the fashion of today and which fits
in with current fashion trends. Colours and embellishments will of their own
choice. The class will include advice on placement and balance to achieve an
aesthetically pleasing creation.
Students do not require any previous experience.

9.30 - 4 pm ( ½ hour break for lunch)

Tutor: Ailie Miller began making hats in 1977 as a hobby.
Two years later the label Dollie Vardin was established and her first
small retail shop was opened in Christchurch. By the end of the 1970's and
early 1980's hats were extremely popular, complimenting the strong fashion of
the day. Dollie Vardin made many hats for Benson Hedges designers, created
original hats for winning outfits at the races and, made hats for television
and movies . Currently, her work mainly entails hats for weddings,
races and special occasions.

FASHION DESIGN - BEGINNERS
THREE DAY MID SEMESTER WORKSHOPS
This three day workshop enables students to work at a solid pace and as with
the night class, introduces students to the general aspects of fashion design.
As this course is scheduled during the school holidays it is also an
opportunity for Secondary School students who are considering a career in
Fashion Design to gain some hands on experience and some insight in to Fashion
Design at Tertiary level.

and texture medium to create a basic design concept. The course will assist
students in developing a critical eye to enable appreciation of other artists'
work as well as enabling them to make design decisions when painting alone.
Students will have the opportunity to improve current painting skills or learn
from scratch functional, original, resourceful acrylic techniques. At the
conclusion of the weekend students can reasonably expect to have created a near
completed painting.
Suitable for beginners and advanced artists.

SURFACE DESIGN on CANVAS and WOOD
TWO DAY MID SEMESTER WORKSHOP
Students will receive instruction on the creation of a design and will cut
their own stencil for printing on either a wooden panel or canvas. The two day
workshop incorporates the preparation of canvas or wood for printing. The
course covers the application of different colour techniques and students will
learn how to set paint on to different mediums. Students who work more quickly
will be able to complete works in both canvas and wood.
Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 July
9.30am - 4 pm (includes a ½ hour break for lunch)
Cost: $225.00 (plus a $40 material fee to be paid directly to the
tutor)
TUTOR: Angelique Delano Lennane was born in Santiago, Chile and
graduated from the Fine Arts Institute "Andres Bello" in Santiago. From 1983,
she spent 7 years in Germany, France and Switzerland developing an interest in
textiles and graduating with a degree in Textile Art. Angelique studied Colour
and Design for a year in Milano Italy under Professor Mario Tapia, She returned
to New Zealand in 1990 to continue working as a freelance artist and art
teacher in mixed media, integrating fabric into conceptual art.
In 2003 she graduated with a BFA in Printmaking from Elam, School of
Fine Arts and is currently teaching part time in the Fashion Department at
Whitecliffe.

SILK PAINTING
Painting on Silk is a completely different experience from more usual
mediums like canvas. The material responds in its own unique way enabling
students to create delicately beautiful images and designs. The workshop will
focus on Composition, Design and Technical skills and students will be able to
complete two pieces of silk art over the two days.
Students do not need to have any drawing or painting experience

Cost: $225.00 (plus $40 material fee to be paid to the
tutor)
TUTOR: Angelique Lennane
Angelique Delano Lennane was born in Santiago, Chile and graduated from
the Fine Arts Institute "Andres Bello" in Santiago. From 1983, she spent 7
years in Germany, France and Switzerland developing an interest in textiles and
graduating with a degree in Textile Art. Angelique studied Colour and Design
for a year in Milano Italy under Professor Mario Tapia, She returned to New
Zealand in 1990 to continue working as a freelance artist and art teacher in
mixed media, integrating fabric into conceptual art.
In 2003 she graduated with a BFA in Printmaking from Elam, School of
Fine Arts and is currently teaching part time in the Fashion Department at
Whitecliffe.

LANDSCAPE PAINTING
This course is offered over two consecutive Saturdays to beginner or
intermediate level students who would like to learn to paint representational
landscapes in an impressionist style. The weekend format allows students to
immerse themselves in a painting class for a longer period of time without
interruption. As with the night class taught by Steve, students will be taught
the fundamental principles of paint application to achieve atmospheric
perspective and dimension and will be shown how warm and cool colours are used

colour to change tonal values. Most importantly, Steve will show students the
four key things you need to know about composing and creating a successful

SURFACE DESIGN ON FABRIC
This One Day Workshop focuses on a number of techniques and styles for
dyeing and painting fabric including cotton, calico, silk and poly-cotton,
Students will work with Gutta resist in creating a monochromatic colour
scheme, Salt technique in creating a complementary colour scheme, and Lace and
Paper technique in creating a split complementary colour scheme. Students will
also prepare their own stencils and will receive instruction on imaging wax
technique. At the conclusion of the class students will have completed four
pieces of work

"DOORS OPEN" - ACRYLIC PAINTING
The intention of this workshop is to experiment, to play and to develop
creative ideas in a very supportive and enjoyably rigorous environment.
Over the two Saturdays students will explore colour, composition and design
principles to enhance their toolbox of skills and world of creative
potential

TUTOR: Lynnemaree Patterson currently teaches at Whitecliffe College of
Arts and Design. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts, has worked on community arts
projects, taught art in Asia and the Pacific, worked for the Worldwild Life
Fund for Nature and in a past life been an economist. She brings a wealth of
life experience and a passion and warmth to her classes. Come enjoy exploring
your creativity through colour, risk taking and play.
