Whitecliffe Photo Media Head of Department Becky Nunes and Year 4 student Georgia Periam attended the 2016 Obscura Festival of Photography in George Town, Penang from the 19 – 26 August. The festival is Malaysia’s “premier photography festival that celebrates photography from Asia and around the globe” presenting a range of exhibitions, workshops, portfolio reviews, talks and slide shows each year.
Georgia attended an intensive photography workshop in advance of the festival led by Sarker Protick, a documentary photographer and lecturer from Bangladesh and Belgian photographer, Léonard Pongo. She also worked alongside students from Photography Studies College in Melbourne, who attend the festival every year with their programme leader Daniel Boetker-Smith. The workshop culminated in a public exhibition of student work launched on the opening weekend of the festival.
Becky and Georgia gained incredible insight into photography and photo-book making in the Asia-Pacific region and made plenty of new connections. Have a look at the highlights from Becky and Georgia’s trip to Obscura on our Whitecliffe Instagram feed whitecliffe_life.
