Interview: Behind the Scenes at New Zealand Fashion Week

Year Four Photography student James Black photographed NZFW this year and gained first-hand experience in shooting the high-caliber industry event. Not only did he get to build up his portfolio with images, but he also received great advice from seasoned pros.

Portfolio and networking benefits

“I would go as far to say that NZFW has been the best work experience I have gained so far in the development of my career. Both my photographic portfolio and professional network have benefited from this experience. At last year’s event, I was brought on as a photographic intern, which helped me establish some amazing working relationships. This year, I was able to extend those relationships further and grow my network, which in my opinion is just as important as a portfolio.”

Work exposure

“My photographs of the runway are being used on the up and coming blog All In A Row, and the well established website Beautiful Bedlam. I have also been using my images to extend my professional network by distributing some of the images via Instagram, which has subsequently connected me with brands, designers and other industry insiders.”

Working alongside the professionals

“In all honesty, it was a priceless experience to work among some of the best fashion photographers in NZ and Australia. I received some amazing advice on the second day from a Melbourne-based photographer, as he noticed that I was happy, yet not happy with my images. He said that shooting the runway is one of the hardest challenges for any photographer - yet he was not implying that I was failing. After some discussion and technical tips, I began taking some of the best runway shots I have ever achieved. When he came to see my images the next day, he was pleasantly surprised with my overnight development, so I was quite happy about that!”
