Now in its 14th year, NZ Fashion Week (NZFW) was established in 2001 “enabling our local designers to promote and profile their brand to a national and international audience.” Runway shows have included collections from names such as Trelise Cooper, Stolen Girlfriends Club, Juliette Hogan and numerous up-and-coming designers. This year’s event took place from 25-31 August at the ANZ Viaduct Events Centre on Auckland’s waterfront. Graduates and current students from Whitecliffe took part in the action, both behind-the-scenes and on the runway. Here is the shortlist:
Behind the scenes at NZ Fashion Week
Whitecliffe Fashion Design department organized for six Year Two students to be VIP hosts for NZ Fashion Week. Georgia Lloyd, Olivia Sefton, Grace Pearson-Green, Malorie Cooney, Gracie Antonievich-Jeremiah and Olive Cashmore were all assigned a VIP buyer to host over the time period of the various events and shows. This involved being with their VIP on site at the venue and accompanying them around the city for showroom visits. Overall, the students had a valuable and inspiring experience.
“There was a lot of diversity at the shows-it was cool to see so many up-and- coming designers and inspiring to meet VIPs from NZ that had made it big- it makes the vision all the more realistic.” –Georgia Lloyd
“It was interesting to see the buyer’s perspective and how every aspect of a fashion show needs to be consistent with telling a story. The whole concept-from the music, hair, makeup, shoes to choreography, it is good motivation for when we present our collections in the Whitecliffe Fashion Show at the end of the year.” – Olivia Sefton
Harman Grubisa at Marr Factory
Harman Grubisa is a collaboration between Whitecliffe graduates Madeleine Harman and Jessica Grubisa. They presented their first collection at the Marr Factory’s ‘MF Gatecrashers’- a series of fashion shows presented at The Golden Dawn in Ponsonby. MF Gatecrashers featured five young labels new to the NZ fashion scene, including Harman Grubisa. Madeleine and Jessica were featured in Viva Magazine talking about the event. The duo were featured again in Viva, talking about their ‘favourite things’, including their love of prints from Year 3 Fine Arts student Veronika Djoulai.
Trish Peng at NZ Fashion Week
Whitecliffe Fashion Design graduate Trish Peng debuted her latest collection of colourful, vibrant designs on the runway for the 2014-15 summer season. Trish’s show was featured with a video on TV3 and reviewed on FashioNZ.
Amber Whitecliffe at NZ Fashion Week
Amber Whitecliffe was one of three up and coming designers to feature a collection in the New Generation Show at New Zealand Fashion Week. The collection proved to be a success and was featured on Yahoo! New Zealand Lifestyle and on Te Karere TVNZ. Amber also showed her collection at the Miromoda showcase as a winner of the 2014 Miromoda Fashion Design Competition.
