Year Three Fashion Design student Nicole Wesseling recently attended the Dowse Art Gallery Awards in Lower Hutt. She was named the recipient of first runner-up in the Dowse Craft and Design Award. The competition is run by Friends of the Dowse and sponsored by ECC Lighting. Nicole was awarded a substantial monetary prize.
The entry Nicole submitted was her Autumn/Winter 2012 collection named Vincent. It takes inspiration from traditional Dutch costume, Dutch artists Vermeer and Van Gogh as well as the work of street photographers August Sanders and Vivian Maier. The collection embraces the aesthetics of peasant clothing whilst commenting on the direct similarities between the traditional Dutch costume of both children and adults. Nicole noted that Industrial design was a strong practice amongst the other students in the competition with the majority of them submitting furniture designs.
Nicole enjoyed travelling to Wellington for the awards and relished the opportunity to meet students in various design fields. Nicole says, “It’s brilliant to have my clothing exhibited in the Dowse Art Gallery alongside other winning entries, including a lamp and a table.” Nicole also encourages students to enter the annual Dowse Art Museum Competition in the future, “after speaking to judges from Friends of the Dowse, I’ve learnt the importance of high quality photographic documentation. Thanks to James Black from blackphotographic.com (a current Year 3 Photography student); I was commended on the quality of my presentation. Keep this in mind if you’re interested in entering in 2014”.
