Whitecliffe Fashion Student Interns with New York Designer

Most people only dream of being an intern to a fashion designer in New York. Nazneen Daruwalla went out and actually did it.

“I started off by emailing more than 25 designers to see if they were taking on any interns. Some (like Alexandra Wang) I got a reply from saying the duration for an internship is three months. Thomasine Dolan was the only one who accepted me for three weeks.”

“Because the label has been in business for two years, I got to learn more management skills of how to operate a small business and how a fashion label is created from scratch.”

“I was her design assistant. This enabled me to go to different factories, manufacturers, pattern makers and other accessory shops. She also took me to her meetings and fitting appointments. My job was more in the city fashion district than in her studio. I ran errands for her in the city; getting covered buttons made, purchasing materials and notions, delivering cheques, dropping off sample drawings/fabrics and making cut tickets for final designs.”

It was the experience of a lifetime, says Nazneen. It meant she also explored New York’s fashion district, MOMA museum and the MET museum, where she saw Schiaparelli and Prada exhibitions.
