Whitecliffe successes at the twentieth annual Wallace Arts Trust Awards

The highly prestigious Wallace Arts Trust Awards were announced on Monday September 5 at the Pah Homestead, TSB Bank Wallace Arts Centre. Prizes valued at over $165,000.00 were presented to the winners by Auckland Mayor Len Brown.

Eleven Whitecliffe faculty and alumni were selected as finalists from the 559 entries received by the Wallace Arts Trust. The Awards were judged by three distinguished New Zealand artists – Philip Trusttum, Sara Hughes, and Peter Gibson-Smith.

Whitecliffe is extremely pleased to acknowledge the success of Akiko Diegel (BFA 2005, Whitecliffe) and Matt Ellwood (Senior Lecturer Whitecliffe Fine Arts Department) who were honoured to be awarded the top prizes.

Current faculty finalists were: Noel Ivanoff (HOD Fine Arts); Jill Sorensen; Yoon Tae Kim; Yolunda Hickman; Jacquie Ure, and Ryuzo Nishida. Whitecliffe Alumni were Rabdeep Singh Baines, Lee Harrop and Aaron McConchie.

Wallace Arts Trust Paramount Award

Akiko receives a 6 month-residency at the International Studio and Curatorial Programme in New York.

Matt Ellwood

The Kaipara Foundation Wallace Trust Award

Matt receives a 3 month-residency at the Altes Spital in Solothurn, Switzerland
