The Inaugural Eden Arts Trust Art Schools Awards

Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design and the Eden Arts Trust are delighted to announce the winners of the inaugural Eden Arts Art Schools Award held on Thursday July 28, 2011. Whitecliffe Year 4 BFA Fine Arts major, Donna Summers was the overall winner and received $5,000 in prize money. Three highly commended students, Loretta Walton (Elam), Chelsea Rothbart (AUT), and Dominic Oldrey (Unitec) each received $1,000.

The Eden Arts Trust Art Schools Award brings together for the first time Central Auckland’s four major art institutions: Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design, Elam School of Fine Arts, Unitec, and AUT. Institution names and the names of the 24 undergraduate students selected (6 from each institution) were concealed while judging took place.

The judges were National Business Review arts writer John Daly-Peoples, gallerist Kate Mullins and new Artspace Director, Caterina Riva.John Daly-Peoples commented: “We were impressed with the overall quality of work from all the art schools. The works showed a high degree of technical skill as well as refined thinking about their practices. Students used the art of the past and present to make relevant and illuminating comments on personal social and environmental issues.”

The Eden Arts Community Arts Trust was formed 23 years ago for the purpose of promoting the arts in the greater Mt Eden area. Eden Arts’ flagship (and sole fundraising) event is the annual Artists in Eden Day in March. Proceeds fund an annual calendar of events including prize money for the long-established Young Artists Awards every September, which is open to 16-25 year olds either living or studying in the Trust’s designated Mt Eden area.

The award exhibition, hosted this year by Elam, is open for public viewing at projectspace B431(20 Whitaker Place) and the George Fraser Gallery (25a Princes Street). The galleries will be open Friday 29 July to Saturday 6 August, 11a.m. - 4p.m. (closed Sunday).
