in English to an academic level. All applicants whose first language is not

in English in the form of a recent IELTS (International English Language
Testing System) or TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score from an
accredited organisation/ institution. Both IELTS and TOEFL are standard. For a

Specific IELTS and TOEFL criteria is outlined below.
Language Support
International undergraduate students with an IELTS score between 5.0 and 6.5
are required to enrol in the year one BFA English and Academics course (12
credits). This course teaches the use of academic English and introduces the
language of arts and design.
Two electives, Writing for Academic Purposes and Advanced Writing for
Academics Purposes, are offered to any student in year one requiring additional
academic writing support. English for Academic Purposes (EAP) is required for
students in years two to four who are identified as requiring ongoing
one-to-one academic writing support.
Whitecliffe, however, does not take responsibility for anyone who fails a
course as a result of their lack of competence in English.
Foundation Studies
Whitecliffe College has partnerships with both FERN English Academy
and AIS St Helens.
These partnerships enable students (both domestic and intenational) to
strengthen their General English skills and create an Artist portfolio for
entrance into tertiary level Arts and Design study in New Zealand.
There are no prerequisites for the semester two 20-week foundation level
certificate programme for domestic students with English as their first
language. However applicants must be at least 17 years of age during their year
of commencement. International students entering the 20-week foundation level
certificate need an English Level of IELTS 5.0.
International students with an IELTS of 4.5 can enter the alternative full
year Certificate of Arts and Design (Foundation). This programme is designed to
raise students' English levels to IELTS 5.0 before entering arts and design
study in semester two. International students must be at least 18 years of age
in their first year of study to enter either programmes.
