Graduated in 2008 (Graphic Design)
Giru was born in South Korea, moved to New Zealand at 13. Giru had a very vague idea on what’s it like to be a graphic designer before he attended Whitecliffe College of Art and Design.
During his study at Whitecliffe, Giru was influenced and gained many insights from passionate lecturers and tutors. Giru now sees everything he did at school was worthwhile, and says ‘Even few essays I felt a bit useless to do at that time, they started pay me back when I pitch a presentation and convince clients, in a sense that I can project my voice in succinct and logical manners’.
Giru believes that graphic design isn’t just fulfilling clients’/designers’ desire to make beautiful things. But it is more of a consideration on how it will affect our lives(environment) in both aesthetical and physical manner.
After graduating from school, Giru worked as a freelance designer for both Korea and New Zealand clients include Seoul Design Centre and Sheffield College of Studies. Giru is now a member of a design studio ‘slowalk’, based in Seoul, where he enjoys to work for both domestic/international NPOs and NGOs such as ‘Korea Fair Trade Foundation’, ‘Save the Children’, ‘Unicef’ and more, within environmentally-friendly way.
