Jono Dunbar - Fine Arts Year Three
“I was accepted into Elam but during the interview process I got a feeling it wasn't right for me - too big, too impersonal. Whitecliffe, on the other hand, immediately seemed very open and accepting,” says Jono Dunbar, who recently won the Year Three Fine Arts student mid-year exhibition painting award.
Before enrolling at Whitecliffe, Jono studied Set Design at Toi Whakaari in Wellington. However, after a year he realised that painting was the artistic direction he wanted to follow.
Whitecliffe opened up “the greater painting discourse” to Jono, giving him the language, methodologies and awareness to be part of contemporary painting in New Zealand and globally.
He loves hands-on, experimental studio work. “I've found myself producing work that I would never have thought I was capable of.”
